Background and Objective: In medical sciences, considering that both students and professors are in contact with patients, the teaching given by professors is very critical and practical at the patient’s bedside. University professors are responsible for the correct transmission of scientific concepts, as well as the scientific and human models of ethical values in the workplace. For this reason, the present study aimed to determine the professional ethics of professors of the University of Medical Sciences from students’ points of view using a systematic review method.
Materials and Methods: This study was a systematic review that was conducted using the reporting system of systematic review studies (PARISMA). All the articles that investigated professional ethics in the teaching of the professors of the University of Medical Sciences in Iran were reviewed. The articles were retrieved from Iranian databases, such as Iranmedex, Magiran, SID, and Irandoc, as well as international databases, including Science Direct, PubMed, ISI, Scopus, and EMBASE. Additionally, to ensure the comprehensiveness of the search, the references of the extracted articles were also studied. To extract data, the researchers used a checklist that included information about the authors’ full name, the year the article was published, the city where the study was conducted, the sample size, the purpose of the study, the major of the studied students, and the main findings of the article. After extracting the data, statistical analysis was performed using a qualitative method.
Results: A total of 3,853 students were examined from 10 articles to investigate the status of professional ethics in teaching. The investigated universities were located in Tehran, Mazandaran, Jahrom, Abadan, Qom, Zabul, Yazd, and Kermanshah, which evaluated all students in various fields of study. According to the findings, the average performance score of the professors in terms of professional ethics was at a desirable level.
Conclusion: The state of professional ethics in teaching from students’ point of view was average to high. For this reason, it is necessary to design a single and uniform tool to check the status of the professional ethics of professors in teaching and to hold necessary training, as well as refresher courses in this field.
