Epidemiological Study of Rice Pill Poisoning in Ilam in 2017-2019

Background and Objective: Rice pill poisoning is one of the most serious high mortality poisoning. Since the epidemiological pattern of rice pill poisoning is not known, this study was performed to investigate the epidemiology of patients with rice pill poisoning who referred to Shahid Mostafa Khomeini Hospital,Ilam, Iran.
Materials and Methods: The present study was performed cross-sectionally on patients poisoned with rice pills. These people were referred to and hospitalized at Mostafa Khomeini Hospital in Ilam, Iran, from the beginning of 2017 to the end of 2019. Statistical tests of t-test, Mann-Whitney, and Chi-Square were used in SPSS software (version 24) and GraphPad Prism (version 8).
Results: The results of this study showed that 60 patients were female and 40% were male. Most people were in the age group 21-30 years and housewives with low education. Around 64% of patients died from taking phostoxin pills.
Conclusion: Rice pill poisoning is a common cause of poisoning in Iran, with a
high mortality rate. This is a serious health problem in communities where
phostoxin pills are used. It is urgent to visit the nearest hospital immediately after
contact with phostoxin (aluminum phosphide pills).
